SV Rutter Commences Restoration of Historical Building Emerson Chambers

SV Rutter Ltd is proud to be undertaking the restoration of Emerson Chambers, one of Newcastle upon Tyne’s most recognisable historic landmarks. Situated on Blackett Street and home to Waterstones Bookshop, the Grade II* listed building is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Art Nouveau architecture in the North East.

Designed by renowned Newcastle architect Benjamin Simpson and completed in 1903, Emerson Chambers is an important part of the city’s architectural heritage. Our restoration programme has been carefully planned to preserve the building’s original character while ensuring it can continue to serve future generations.

The project includes a comprehensive programme of specialist conservation works, including stonework restoration, brickwork repairs, laser façade cleaning, traditional slate roofing, leadwork, copper dome restoration and structural repairs. Throughout the project, Waterstones remains open to the public, requiring careful planning and coordination to minimise disruption.

The project also includes the complete refurbishment of the original clock mechanism, with specialist repairs and servicing undertaken to return the clock to full working order.
