Traditional Craftsmanship Restoring the Historic Clock Tower at Emerson Chambers

The restoration of Emerson Chambers extends far beyond stonework and roofing. One of the most technically challenging elements of the project is the refurbishment of the building’s historic clock tower and its distinctive timber structure.

To accurately recreate the original curved timber sections, SV Rutter’s craftsmen constructed a bespoke steam box, allowing carefully selected timber to be heated before being shaped to match the original architectural profile. This traditional method has been used for generations and remains one of the most effective ways of producing complex curved timber components for heritage buildings.

Alongside the timber restoration, the project also includes the conservation of the clock tower’s decorative copperwork, ensuring the building retains its distinctive skyline for many years to come.
